Despite fighting for her life for days, a trans woman died after being thrown from a moving truck in Mexico.
And unknown assailant or assailants allegedly murdered Brigitte, 20 last week. They threw her from the pickup truck while driving on the Mérida-Cancún highway in north-east Mexico.
Witnesses reported seeing the suspect throwing Brigitte from the truck. They rushed to help her and reported she was bleeding heavily from her head.
Brigitte was taken to a nearby hospital where she died from head trauma a few days later. Police are still searching for the suspects.
Her murder in the state of Yucatan comes just days after the local government swore to end LGBTI discrimination.
Merida Mayor Renán Barrera Concha again promised his commitment to the city’s plan to promote equality for all citizens.
The city’s director of Social Development and executive secretary of the Municipal Council, José Luis Martínez Semerena, said the council will spearhead policies that ensure human rights and equality.
‘This could not be achieved if we do not provide the conditions to eradicate practices of exclusion and discrimination such as racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny and other types of intolerance,’ he said in a speech at the end of February.
‘An annual work plan will be designed to promote equitable and fair treatment to people of sexual diversity in municipal public services; organize and open opinion forums, courses, workshops and seminars to promote respect, inclusion and tolerance, mainly towards sexual diversity, including special medical and psychological care programs among others.’
Despite these efforts, Mexico still remains one of the most dangerous places in the world for trans women.
By November last year, 71 trans women were murdered in Mexico. It came second in the world for most trans murders behind Brazil which had more than 167.
