Billie Eilish responds to backlash over new single Wish You Were Gay

Billie Eilish responded to backlash over new single Wish You Were Gay this week (6 March).

The pop ballad drew criticism for its ‘queer-baiting’ lyrics.

But in an interview with Pop Buzz, the 17-year-old explained: ‘I want to be so clear that it’s so not supposed to be an insult.

‘I feel like it’s been a little bit misinterpreted. I tried so hard to not make it in any way offensive.’

‘The whole idea of the song is it’s kind of a joke.

‘”I’m an ass and you don’t love me,” and you don’t love me because you don’t love me and that’s the only reason and I wish you didn’t love me because you didn’t love girls.’

‘Cisgender nonsense’

When the song dropped earlier this week, the American singer-songwriter garnered criticism.

One lyric in particular said: ‘I can’t tell you how much I wish I didn’t wanna stay / I just kinda wish you were gay.’

A Twitter user said: ‘How y’all out here stanning billie eilish when she’s deadass queerbaiting everyone with her music.’

‘Billie Eilish’s new song is gross, queer-baiting, straight, cisgender nonsense and i’m over it,’ another said.

One simply responded: ‘When will heteros stay in their fucking hetero lane.’

The track is the fourth single taken from her highly-anticipated debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

The album drops 29 March.

Not the only pop artist

Ariana Grande’s Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored drew similar criticism last month.

In a twist, Ariana ends up with the girlfriend herself, not the boyfriend.

As a result some accused the pop star, too, of ‘queer-baiting’ her fans.
