With the help of the Human Rights Camapign, more than 1,500 parents of transgender children in the US signed and sent a letter to the Trump administration.

Earlier this week, a leaked memo from the administration revealed intentions to erase transgender people.

Immediately, people began protesting and ACLU threatened legal action against the government for future discriminatory actions.

Addressed to Donald Trump and his Vice President, Mike Pence, the parents open the letter: ‘We are the parents of transgender children from across the United States, representing various races and ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and faith communities.

‘We write to expressour outrage and deep concern over the Trump-Pence Administration’s proposal to legally define sex as either male or female, unchangeable and based on unscientifically narrow criteria.

‘This is the latest cruel attempt in a long line of attacks to diminish the existence and humanity of our children and to dismantle their basic human and civil rights. We want to make this very clear — when our children are under attack, we will fight like hell to protect them.’

The passion of parents

Throughout the letter, the parents express wanting their children to be safe and happy.

‘We fear every day that our children will encounter bullies — but we never imagined that the most threatening bullies would be in the White House,’ they write.

The letter acknowledges the disproportionate violence trans people face in the country, especially trans women of color.

‘It is your role to protect our children, not to erase them from civil rights laws,’ they tell the leaders of the country.

At the end of the letter, the parents encourage the government to help the children who need them. They write that their children are the students who are ‘put at real risk of daily harm — physical, emotional, and psychological — when legal protections are taken away’.

What do the parents promise to do? Vote.

‘We will vote to restore decency and compassion to our Congress and to our national leadership. We will vote to secure a nation in which our children can live fully, freely, to their greatest potential.

‘We will vote to save lives — the lives of our children, all transgender and nonbinary people, and all vulnerable communities in our nation who your Administration views as secondary and disposable.’

The hardships youth face

Across the world, LGBTI youth face the normal anxieties of growing up, compounded by figuring out their sexual and/or gender identity.

In Australia, rights groups are calling on the government to do more in protection of LGBTI teachers and students.

Within the United States, LGBTQ students face a variety of discrimination and harassment, which leads to tangible consequences. Plus, for the first time in years, LGBTQ progress in US schools is slowing.

Trans youth specifically also face higher rates of suicide ideation.
