A former Broadway dancer who beat and strangled his boyfriend to death has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Marcus Bellamy, 35, murdered his boyfriend Bernardo Almonte, 27, in their Morris Heights apartment in New York City, USA, on 17 August 2016.
According to Bellamy, the pair smoked crystal meth together.
At the sentencing at the Bronx Supreme Court on 12 March, the victim’s mother, Norka Vargas, broke down into tears as she recounted how her son survived cancer 11 years prior.
According to the New York Daily News, she said: ‘But he survived, he survived it. Eleven years later, I received the bad news. Bernardo was killed.
‘I couldn’t believe what I was hearing – having won the battle over cancer, I was shocked to hear he had lost his life at the hands of someone else after God had given him a second chance of life.
‘No human being deserves to die the way you killed my son. It was inhuman. For no reason. He was taken away and I still don’t know why. This is a question only you can answer for me: Why did you kill my son?’
On the day of the murder, police attended the scene after a call from a neighbor. Almonte was found unconscious and lying face down, suffering from head trauma. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
However, after the incident, Bellamy posted a series of cryptic Facebook posts.
He wrote: ‘Any plot, plan, or action against me will only result in my triumph and your destruction.’
After a few posts about ‘the rapture’, he wrote: ‘Forgive me father’ and ‘I did it for love’.
He then knocked on a neighbor’s door to confess the killing.
Before sentencing, Bellamy told the court: ‘I want to apologize to the family. Bernardo was very special and he didn’t deserve what happened to him. You asked me why. Your son and I used to smoke a lot of crystal meth together.
‘On this day, I thought your son was the devil. I didn’t want to do what I did. I want to make that clear.
‘I loved Bernardo. He took me out of my depression. I didn’t mean to destroy somebody.’
Bellamy pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter on 20 February 2019. He will serve 20 years in prison, followed by five years supervision once out.
Bellamy once performed in Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark.
