London Mayor Sadiq Khan, is calling on the UK government to stop cuts to public health and fully fund PrEP.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a drug taken by HIV-negative people before sex that reduces the risk of getting HIV.
This morning (11 March), Khan sent a damning letter to Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, to make PrEP accessible to all.
‘I’m proud of the work that London is doing to tackle HIV,’ he said in a letter. ‘But I’m shocked that the government is failing to provide local authorities in London with the funding they need to provide PrEP to all those who could benefit.’
He then continued: ‘PrEP has been proven to help those at risk of infection, yet it is still only being trialled in London and local councils have been unable to accept all of the places.
‘The impact will be felt by the most vulnerable Londoners and those who cannot afford to buy PrEP privately.
‘If we are to achieve our aim of ending new HIV infections, it is vital that we expand access to proven treatment now.
‘That’s why the government must give health providers the support they need and why I will continue to take every opportunity to highlight the damage that cuts to public health funding are making to our ability to keep Londoners healthy and tackle health inequalities across our city,’ he said.

Khan recently appeared alongside LGBTI employees from London’s City Hall for an important message of diversity and inclusion.
He said: ‘The LGBT+ community makes a huge contribution to London. Making it a richer, brighter, more vibrant place.
The London Mayor says he’s proud that the ‘overwhelming majority’ of London-based LGBTI people are comfortable living out and proud.
But he says that’s not a reality for some people in the community.
He continued: ‘I’d like to share with you some of the experiences and stories from members of our staff network.
‘While they capture the challenges and sense of isolation LGBT+ people can sometimes feel, they also offer hope and optimism for the future,’ he said.
