Award-winning actresses Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan have been spotted on the set of lesbian period drama Ammonite.

Production for the movie inspired by the life of fossil hunter Mary Anning has taken over the coastal town of Lyme Regis in West Dorset, England.

The film follows ‘palaeontologist Anning and a London woman of means to whom she must unexpectedly play nursemaid’.

God’s Own Country director Frances Lee is behind the camera for the movie, set to be released later this year.

Lesbian actress Fiona Shaw also stars in an unknown role.

Ronan and Winslet on set

The two stars showed up on set in period costumes.

Winslet has dyed her hair brown for the role of Anning. She donned a plaid skirt and a navy coat and worn a brown leather satchel, while Ronan was wearing a heavy black gown and bonnet.

Principal photography began on 11 March and fans gathered on set to catch a glimpse of the two actresses.

‘Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan on set of their upcoming film Ammonite as lovers this is not a game I don’t know how to cope,’ one fan tweeted.

Fans also took short videos of Winslet and Ronan filming and posted them on social media.

Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan to star as ‘unlikely’ lovers in upcoming movie

British actors Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan are starring in an upcoming period drama where they’ll play ‘unlikely’ lovers.

The movie, Ammonite, is based on the life of fossil hunter Mary Anning. It’s a romance directed by Francis Lee, who previously out the queer romantic-drama God’s Own Country.

Taking place in an English coastal town in the 1840s, the movie follows ‘palaeontologist Mary Anning and a London woman of means to whom she must unexpectedly play nursemaid’, according to Deadline.

It is not clear which actor will be playing which role.

Both actors, however, are critically acclaimed and highly celebrated. Winslet has been nominated seven times for an Oscar, and won once (in 2009 for The Reader).

Ronan, meanwhile, at 24, has been nominated for three Oscars. Her most recent nod was this year for his leading role in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird. She currently stars alongside fellow Oscar nominee Margot Robbie in Mary Queen of Scots.

God’s Own Country won Lee the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Directing at Sundance in 2017. It also won the prize for best film at the British Independent Film Awards.
