A musical featuring the songs of Britney Spears is set to premiere in Chicago later this year.
The show, titled Once Upon A One More Time, will include Britney’s best bangers.
If you’re expecting a musical on Spears’s life, however, you need to think again.
The show will, in fact, use her songs to fit an original plot. Said plot will offer a feminist take on some of the most classic fairy tales, such as Cinderella and Snow White.
Discovering The Feminine Mystique
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will focus on a group of princesses starting a royal book club and challenging the idea of femininity thanks to a fairy godmother.
The synopsis reads: ‘Once Upon a Time … Cinderella, Snow White, and the other fairytale princesses gather for their book club, when — oh, baby, baby! — a rogue fairy godmother drops The Feminine Mystique into their corseted laps, spurring a royal revelation.’
The Feminine Mystique is the book by Betty Friedan which is said to have sparked the second-wave feminism. How will Work Bitch be interlaced into all of that?
When will it premiere?
The musical is scheduled to have its pre-Broadway debut this fall at the James M. Nederlander Theatre.
Performances will begin on 29 October before the official opening on 13 November. The show will then run until 1 December, one day before Spears’s 38th birthday.
The princess of pop herself gave the show her blessing after she caught a workshop performance of Once Upon A One More Time last year in New York.
‘I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs — especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore,’ Britney said in a statement.
‘This is a dream come true for me!’
The show will be directed by Rock of Ages Kristin Hangii and features a book by Jon Hartmere. Moreover, YouTube stars and married couple Keone and Mari Madrid will choreograph.
Casting and the rest of the creative team will be announced soon.
News of the musical came months after Britney canceled her Vegas residency due to her father’s ailing health.
