Jude Law: World ‘bloody well should be’ ready for gay Dumbledore

Jude Law as a young Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts

Jude Law, who made his debut as a young Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, spoke of his character’s sexuality in a recent interview.

While speaking to the New York Times, the English actor addressed concerns about the movies not exploring Dumbledore’s sexuality.

‘Put it this way: This film is not about (Dumbledore’s) homosexuality, nor does his sexuality define him,’ he said.

‘But that relationship is certainly a defining element of who he is and what he’s about.’

This follows speculation before the film’s release about Dumbledore’s sexuality and his relationship with Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).

Harry Potter author JK Rowling revealed Dumbledore is gay after the final book in the series, Deathly Hallows, was published.

Fans were eager to see a canonically gay character in such a beloved world explored further — then director David Yates said the character wouldn’t be ‘explicitly’ gay.

Law followed that up by saying the franchise wasn’t going to ‘reveal everything at once’.

So will the movies show Dumbledore’s sexuality?

It’s still unclear. Law doesn’t know the content of the remaining three films in the franchise. He did share his thoughts on Dumbledore’s character, though.

‘I also don’t think he’s someone who has given his heart or his soul to many people,’ he posited. ‘The aftermath of their relationship left him reeling, and he’s packed his heart in ice, to be honest, and no one’s quite thawed it.’

Dumbledore and Grindelwald became friends as teenagers and fell in love, before their ideals and morals drove them apart. In wizarding history, Grindelwald became one of the most powerful and dangerous wizards, leaving chaos, destruction, and death in his wake.

Some fans were not happy when Depp, whose ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic abuse, was cast as Grindelwald.

Regardless of casting opinions, Law believes audiences should be open to embracing a gay Dumbledore.

‘I think the world is ready for it and if it isn’t, it bloody well should be.’

How is the movie doing?

The film made $62.2 million in its North American opening weekend. That is the lowest ever first weekend intake for a Harry Potter film.

On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave the film an average score of 40%. This is also the lowest ever score for a Harry Potter film, and the only film in the franchise to be certified ‘rotten’.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is currently in theaters. Creators have three more movies planned for the franchise.
